Reflect in your learning log about what you learned and enjoyed most from this part of the
course and what you might use in the next section that will focus on People and Places. Choose
some of these questions as a starting point:
-
What were the main challenges you encountered when working with unusual drawing
techniques and how did you overcome them?
I didnt find much challengin in this part 2, I only was plesantly suprised when something didnt turn out liek I wanted liek the drawing with tea bags, The tea stain was often too light so I used coffee which was a lot darker. The cherry jucie I used was the most unexpected result, when it dried it turned a greyish blue. It was a good experiement overall though. The only other thing was that Its similar to watercolour in whcih if a mistake is made it cannot really be fixed. The other technique I liked was the 5 minute drawings where each try the time was shortened. The drawing I had to be quicker for were challenging but I feel they help me to focus on the important shapes and
details of a picture when working on a time limit. As ofr the others like blind contour and limited lines I have done all these in the past and enjoy them.- Now you have drawn with unusual materials, what techniques or materials are you going to use
within your next sketchbook?
I
will deffinetly use the quick sketching as a way I can document as much
as possible in a short amount of time, it will be good practice as I
said to learn to focus on key parts of an image so that its still
understandable. I will also continue with things like mini books, foldout and
envelopes and such throughout my sketchbook as it makes looking at the
pages more fun. I may use coffee and tea again maybe even try find some other juice or beverage, this will be good as an alternative to watercolour. Referencing Christoph Niemann I have now found a new way to create characters using random photos, Im always looking for a new series to do. I will also coninue to use collage as it can really make the difference between an empty background and one that stand out.
- How did you find moving from observed drawings towards using ideas and more of an
imaginative approach?
I
like the variation of having a bit more freedom with using my own
imagination but also drawing from observation to see how accurate or
well I can capture an object or scene and how long it takes me. Howere sometimes I find having to create my own image with no reference a bit intimidating but then again Its and unpredictable process and sometimes it turns out really good.
- What have you learned about drawing quickly that you can take forward when you look at
drawing people in part three?
I can allow myself to have a bit of freedom with drawings, I can use a lot more continious lines and keep practicing finding the important details and features of something. This will also be good for taking my skecthbook out into public or for a journey I will not need a great amount of time to capture something in my environment.
- Which of the illustrators mentioned in this section work did you most enjoy looking at and
why?
Christopher Niemann because I love the mixture between real life and cartoon, it brightens up an image ratehr then just either being a photograph or a solo cartoon without a background. I can also relate to this style of art because I to do a lot of cartoons and create characters.
Lucy Austin's work is so fun she has inspired me to explore more experimental background Ideas, using collage, paint, pencil, charcoal. It was quite theraputic when putting random patterns, splashes, lines and stuff onto the page and using colours that are nice together. They all turned out great my versions and theyre all so busy; also this technique was quite easy and quick to do.
- If you haven’t joined a sketchbook circle yet do you feel ready to join one?
I have not joined a sketchbook circle yet, I may in the future but right now I'd like to work solo. I have joined a discord chat with other students I may ask for feedback If I feel I need it and also ask them if they can show their skecthbooks.
Feedback
Recieveing my feedback I will maybe put a little more effort into researching various artists and even testing out their methods in my own skecthbook, I think it may give me new ways of creating art.
